Canon Background: I need to give a background for friggin’ Batman?! Well, alright, here’s a link.
Omegafriends Background: Batman’s history is largely unchanged in this AU. Born to billionaire couple Thomas and Martha Wayne, young Bruce Wayne grew up under the loving and watchful eye of his parents and was set to live a storied life and one day inherit Wayne Enterprises. A massive global corporation as famous for its size and success as its charitable activities.
Until that fateful night when a trip home from the theater turned tragic. The Waynes were confronted by an armed mugger. Thomas moved to protect his family and in the struggle, both he and Martha were shot and killed right in front of their son’s eyes. The mugger fled the scene, leaving eight year old Bruce alone with the bodies of his parents.
The gunman was never caught, or even identified.
The shooting made headlines across the nation, to reactions running the gamut from mourning to cynical dismissal, to being considered a harsh wake-up call that crime reached all levels of society. But nobody was changed by that night as much as Bruce.
Raised by the family butler, Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce became obsessed with understanding the criminal mind and through what remained of his childhood and adolescence began studying criminology and detective work in his free time. At the time, it was simply viewed as a young man’s mechanism for coping with tragedy. This continued until he graduated from Princeton and then, he vanished off the public face for ten years. Wayne Enterprises was left in the hands of Thomas Wayne’s longtime partner and friend, Lucius Fox.
The official story is that the young billionaire had taken his trust fund and set off over the globe. Indeed, there are a few appearances of him living it up in various countries around the world. The truth was, however, that he was training. For ten years of his life he traveled the world to visit masters in dozens of disciplines. Martial arts, escape artistry, psychology, science.
By the time he returned home, the world was in the middle of the end of the first age of superheroes. Heroes and villains were retiring and vanishing from the scene and in their wake a power vacuum expanded. Street crime rates flew up in the first few months and the police seemed overwhelmed just trying to keep up.
This was the time that the legend of the Batman began.
To this day, nobody seems to have the same story of just who or what the Batman is. Some believe him to be a super that didn’t retire or changed his identity, others think he’s a mutant and still others call him a vengeful spirit punishing the wicked. Some say he never kills, others that he’s taken dozens of lives.
So it’s been for years, even with new superheroes taking the stage and at least one that’s rumored to have been trained by Batman himself, the Dark Knight has largely stayed out of the public view and although most people out there are actually convinced of his actual existence, nobody can seem to pin down any definitive answers about who he is or where he came from.
Personality: For all the world, Bruce Wayne is the classic image of the bachelor, billionaire playboy. Dashing, charming, devil-may-care and… perhaps not too bright. He’s the majority stockholder in Wayne Enterprises, but whether because of a lack of interest or just not having a mind for business, he very clearly isn’t interested in actually running the business. Instead, he continues to leave the daily matters of Wayne Enterprises in the capable hands of CEO Lucius Fox.
He does remain largely devoted to continuing his parents’ legacy, however. Having founded the Thomas and Martha Wayne Foundation years earlier, Wayne Enterprises continues its charitable efforts under Bruce’s direction and despite his flippant attitude, Bruce is openly and publicly supportive of these efforts.
Of course, Bruce Wayne is just the mask.
The vigilante known as Batman is a grim and stoic figure with an attitude to match his appearance. Ruthlessly stern and blunt, Batman never shies away from saying what needs to be said no matter how unhappy the other person might be to hear it, or how powerful they might be. On the same note, he’s a commanding presence. When Batman speaks, people listen. Period. If anybody has a problem with that, they’re more than free to take it up with him. Only occasionally does he show signs of having a dry, sarcastic sense of humor, and only to those who know him well enough to get it.
Beyond anything else, Batman is driven by his mission to a quite frankly obsessive degree. The mission has consumed his life, devouring everything else until only that remained. He never gives up, never backs down and pursues his goals with a tenacity bordering on the inhuman. Batman will stop at nothing to bring those who harm others to justice.
However, the most important word there is “justice” not “revenge.” More than anybody else, Batman himself is aware of the razor’s edge he walks upon. As such, he keeps himself firmly in check with his own ironclad code. He’ll never willingly take a life and indeed does his best to save every single one he can, even those that many people wouldn’t consider worth it. He never fails to extend a hand and an offer of help to even the most hardcore psychotics he comes across, no matter how often the offer is turned away. Likewise, while Batman will take any risk to achieve his mission, it has to be his own and no one else’s.
That, more than anything, is what defines the Dark Knight. His mission is not to inflict vengeance and punishment on the wicked, but to protect those they would hurt, to do everything in his power to ensure that no eight year old child will ever lose their parents in a filthy alley ever again even if it’s a fool’s hope. The rage and sorrow following the loss of his parents may have been what forged him, but they are not what guide him now.
Powers: None. Zip. Nada. Batman is a “mere” mortal human with no special abilities to speak of. However, anybody who thinks “no powers” is the same as “powerless” is in for a rude awakening.
Having spent a lifetime training and conditioning his body, Batman is at the peak of human potential even approaching middle age. He can bench press close to 1000 pounds, his reflexes are just short of superhuman and his speed and agility are on par with the top Olympic athletes. Adding to this, Batman has mastered over 100 styles of martial arts and weapon styles and is considered one of the best hand-to-hand combatants in the world. Such styles include Karate, Jujitsu, Jeet Kune Do, Ninjutsu, Kendo, fencing, marksmanship and too many others to list. The latter of which meaning his stealth skills are practically unparalleled as well.
His mind is equally as formidable. Batman has studied countless disciplines including criminology, psychology, chemistry, biology, forensics, computer science, engineering, mechanics, piloting, sleight of hand, disguise mastery and escapology. He also isn’t called the World’s Greatest Detective for nothing. Batman’s reputation as one of the keenest analytical minds on the planet is well-earned. His powers of observation, deduction and intuition are second to none and he can crack virtually any case given even the smallest clues.
Even further his willpower easily crosses the line into superhuman territory. Batman possesses a truly indomitable force of will, even enough to overpower and avert psychic attacks despite not having any abilities in that area himself.
Above all else though, Batman’s chief weapons are intimidation and mystery. He knows how to instill fear in others and uses that to great effect. His reputation is undeniably greatest asset and one he exploits gladly.
BASICALLY BATMAN KNOWS HOW TO DO A LOT OF STUFF, OKAY.
As if his formidable physical and mental skills weren’t enough, Batman also has the near limitless wealth and resources of Wayne Enterprises at his disposal. Which is where almost all of his equipment comes from.
The Batsuit was designed to be the ultimate close quarters combat gear. The fabric itself is composed of a tight Kevlar-like weave and can effectively block most small-arms fire at long to mid range, although it fares considerably less well against bladed weapons. The boots and gloves are reinforced to absorb the shocks of punches and kicks while still dealing out maximum punishment and armored. The gauntlets each have three retractable metal blades. The suit is fire retardant and insulated against extreme temperature shifts. The cape is surprisingly light and can be used to glide over short distances thanks to the “memory cloth” sewn into it. The cowl is lined partially by lead and reinforced to avoid head trauma from impacts. It comes with infrared and audio sensors and is built to automatically adjust and filter both to compensate for extreme shifts in both light and sound.
Batman carries a small arsenal of field equipment in his iconic utility built. It’s long been something of a joke that Batman has everything and the kitchen sink in that thing and that’s not terribly far off. Batman has pulled everything from plastic explosives, gas grenades, oxygen masks, smoke bombs, grapple hook launchers, cutting tools and, of course, his trademark batarangs.
The batarangs themselves are a class of weapon all their own. At their most basic, they’re simply metal shurikens but variations exist. Everything from explosive, to shock, to EMP and even remote controlled.
Finally, for transportation Batman has several “bat-vehicles” at his disposal. The most famous and well known of these are the Batmobile and Batwing, but many others exist like the Batboat (doubling as the Batsub) and Batcycle but none of those see quite as much use. All of his vehicles are modified from extremely advanced military-grade hardware and come equipped with a variety of armaments. In addition, all of them are designed specifically to be used in any terrain and conditions, including urban environments for obvious reasons.
Quite a list, isn’t it? Still, it’s worth noting that despite all of his skills and equipment Batman is still otherwise a regular human. He’s vulnerable to everything a human being is vulnerable to and isn’t any more durable when it comes down to it. For all his abilities, a single stray bullet or lucky shot is all it could take to end the Caped Crusader for good.
